essay: Raising your hands in church?

Raising your hands in church?… Why?

I personally have no problem with people raising their hands in church. However, I often wonder why people perform this public demonstration. When I get an opportunity , I like to ask Christians why they raise their hands in church.

One fellow admitted to me that he doesn’t know what it means, but that he does it only because he sees other Christians doing it.
Another Christian told me that he does it because, “it makes God happy”. I then asked,
“if it makes God happy, why don’t you keep your hands in the air at all times”?
Another Christian said that we are commanded to raise our hands in church, and pointed out Heb12:12 that says, “Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and thy feeble knees”. KJV . I pointed out to him, that verse says to raise your “hands and knees”.
I chuckled inside, when I saw him try to raise his knees.
Another Christian told me that we are supposed to raise our hands, because the ancient Jews did it as a part of their worship. I pointed out to him, that the ancient Jews also gave burnt offerings to the Lord. He admitted that he doesn’t do that.
Another fellow told me that “it is a sign of submission“. But when I asked him to show me in the bible where it says that, he couldn’t do it. He felt that God wouldn’t know that he was submitting, unless he raised his hands.
My mother used to raise her hands in church. She admitted to me once, that she did it so that people behind her in church, would think that she was spiritual.

Please don’t get the wrong idea, I’m not against it. In fact, it is none of my business what people do in church. If someone wants to jump up and down, and wave his hands all about, like my friend does, its none of my business. But I do take notice, that out of all the people that I have interviewed, none of them can explain to me what it accomplishes.
